Ache much? At-work solutions for MSI pain
Swelling, redness, aches, pain, numbness and tingling are all signs of musculoskeletal injury – and many musculoskeletal injuries occur on the job.
Musculoskeletal injury (MSI) is defined as an injury or disorder of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves or soft tissue and includes strains, sprains, tendonitis, bursitis and tenosynovitis.
So why not start 2010 knowing how to protect yourself?
On the job, there are many factors that contribute to MSI risk – awkward and static postures and repeated force are the ones that most often cause injury.
You can improve your chances of prevnting an MSI by doing four things.
Reduce the risk – intersperse a variety of tasks throughout the day and alternate hands if possible.
Improve your posture – take time to adjust your body, the equipment or patient to support better posture. Change postures and activities often.
Reduce force – use material handling devices or patient handling equipment, keep tools sharp and grip your equipment lightly.
Review activities – look at which outside-work activities, hobbies or sports may aggravate any signs of an MSI.
