Help Searching
Search SAFE Work
This guide explains some features built into the search tool.
Combining Keywords
By entering two or more keywords into the search box, you can search for content containing ANY of those keywords. This is useful when you are unsure of the exact keyword under which the content is categorized.
Example search: protective safety equipment PPE
The results returned in the example above contain any of the keywords: protective, safety, equipment, and PPE. More importance is placed on the keywords which appear first, so content about “protective” and “safety” appear higher in the search results.
Requiring All Keywords
By using the word AND, search results are limited to those which contain all the keywords provided. This is useful when you know at least two keywords under which the content is categorized.
Example search: protective AND footwear
Important: The word AND must be fully capitalized.
The results returned in the example above are about both “protective” and “footwear,” so content which is only about protective headgear will not be displayed. You can use the word AND before as many keywords as you would like to require.
Excluding Certain Keywords
By using the word NOT, search results are limited to those which do not contain a certain keyword. This may be used when you know the type of search results you do not want.
Example search: protective NOT eye
Important: The word NOT must be fully capitalized.
The results returned in the above example are about “protective,” but will contain no mention of “eye.” You can use the word “NOT” before all keywords you would like to exclude.
Searching for Phrases
By placing quotation marks around a phrase, search results can be limited to those which contain the entire phrase, instead of just the words within the phrase.
Example search: “workplace safety and health”
The results returned in the example above will contain the entire phrase “workplace safety and health.”
Searching in an Industry or Topic
Underneath the keyword box is a drop-down box labeled Search Entire Site. Without changing this option, the search tool will return results from all content in the site. If you would like to search for content related to a specific industry or topic, you may click this box and select any one of the options listed.
Example search keyword: safety
Example search drop-down option: Agriculture
The results returned in the example above will be about “safety”, but will relate only to the Agriculture industry.
Browse SAFE Work Resources
To browse a list of all resources for a specific topic or industry, click either the drop-down box labeled by topic or the one labeled by industry. A list of options will be displayed and, once you click one of these, a list of all resources for the selected industry or topic will be displayed. The following sections explain how you can refine this list to display only the resources of interest.
Filter Resources by Sub-Industry
Once you have selected an industry (as detailed in the above instructions “Browse SAFE Work Resources”), a menu will appear on the left side of the screen labeled Resources. The industry you have selected will be show up bold, and its sub-industries will be listed below. Click on any of these sub-industries to display only the resources which apply to it.
Filter Resources by Content Type, by Language, and Alphabetically
Once you have selected an industry or topic (as detailed in the above instructions “Browse SAFE Work Resources”), a list of all applicable resources will appear on the right side of the screen. At the top of this list are buttons which control filtering by content type, by language, and alphabetically.
Content Type
Beside the text Show me is a list of the different types of content available. Clicking one of these content types will filter the resources so that only those of the selected content type will appear. Eg: clicking Bulletins will display only bulletins in the list.
Language
Click either English or French to display only resources written in that language. Not all resources are available in both languages.
Alphabetically
By clicking any letter of the alphabet, the list of resources will be filtered to display only those beginning with the selected letter. If there are no resources beginning with a certain letter, the button will appear dimmer. Click the All button to display all resources without alphabetical filtering.
