Partners in Industry - Mark's Work Wearhouse Believes in SAFE Work

Due to the success of SAFE Work, an increasingnumber of Manitoba businesses are implementing improved workplace safety and health programs and people across the province have become more aware of safety in every aspect of their lives.

Some companies like Mark’s Work Wearhouse (MWW) saw another way to incorporate the SAFE Work programinto their workplace. In 2006, MWW became an advocate for SAFE Work.

“It was really encouraging to see the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba (WCB) get the SAFE Work message out there, promoting a proactive approach to safety,” says Adam Gaiser, MWW Director of Operations, Prairie Region.

In addition to offering casual clothing for men and women, the retailer sells a lot of safety apparel, including footwear, headwear, safety glasses and high visibility clothing. Over the last few years, the store noticed an increasing number of workers from a variety of Manitoba businesses coming in to shop.

“We were seeing a lot of people buying hard hats, footwear and eye protection and decided there was a good synergy in terms of our products and the SAFE Work message,” says Gaiser. “We look at SAFE Work in this way: the WCB does the education, we sell the safety products.”

MWW views its support of the SAFE Work brand as an opportunity to give back to the community. The chain educates its customers by giving out SAFE Work brochures, showcasing SAFE Work signage and participating in other ventures like a safety-related radio campaign.

Gaiser notes that MWW was excited to launch anothernew safety product last fall: anti-slip footwear.

“After a number of years of research in anti-slip footwear, we want to be the market leader, providing anti-slip footwear for any type of industry – from concrete toconstruction, healthcare professionals to cooks. Antislip footwear is relevant to every industry. It’s all about making the jobsite safer. That’s why Mark’s believes in SAFE Work.”
