New Labour and Immigration Minister appointed

On November 3, 2009, The Honourable Greg Selinger, Premier of Manitoba, appointed MLA Jennifer Howard as new Minister for Labour and Immigration; Minister charged with the administration of The Workers Compensation Act; Minister responsible for the Status of Women; and Minister responsible for Persons with Disabilities.  This portfolio includes responsibilities for workplace safety and health in Manitoba.

The Honourable Jennifer Howard acknowledges the efforts, commitment and accomplishments over the past 10 years by government, employers, workers and prevention organizations towards improved occupational safety and health in the province.

“A strong foundation is in place for the protection of workers in Manitoba,” said Howard. “We must make the most of past efforts by moving forward with the prevention plan developed by government and the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba.”

Workplace Safety and Health legislation places the primary responsibility for safety and health on the employer, but also spells out responsibilities for all workplace parties, including the worker.

“Manitobans are more aware of the importance of using safe work practices today,” said Howard.  “This increased awareness, along with an understanding that workplace injuries and illnesses are preventable, will help us reach our goal of providing healthier and safer work environments for all workers in the province.”

The new minister is a lifelong Manitoban, born and raised in Brandon.  A graduate of Brandon University, she moved to Winnipeg in 1998.  Before her election to the Manitoba Legislature, she held positions with the Prairie Women’s Health Centre of Excellence, the Manitoba Action Committee on the Status of Women, and the Women’s Health Clinic, where she served as Executive Director.  She was also a policy advisor to former Premier Gary Doer on health care issues.
