Regulation Review Part 27
Workers in Manitoba have legislated regulations to help keep us safe, day in and day out – no matter what job we do. These regulations are a part of the framework for building safe workplaces in Manitoba.
The Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act and associated regulations are in place to protect you – the worker – from workplace hazards and the risks they present. Manitoba Regulation 217/2006is a 44-part document containing requirements and guidelines for workplaces, including site-specific rules and other valuable information to prevent harm from coming to workers.
Safety Check is profiling one part of the Regulation in each issue to help remind you of the Regulation’s specifics and to help keep safety top-of-mind for all Manitobans
This issue, it’s Regulation Part 27: Working in a Compressed Air Environment.
Regulation Part 27 applies where work is done in a compressed air environment, but does not apply to divers or individuals working in diving bells.
This is a new regulation that requires employers to develop, implement and train workers in SAFE Work procedures.
First of all, 30 days before work in a compressed air environment begins, the employer must notify the Workplace Safety and Health Division (WSHD) in writing.
After notifying WSHD a work plan must be designed by an engineer to meet CAN/CSA standard Z275.3-M86 (R2004), Occupational Safety Code for Construction Work in Compressed Air. The employer then must make sure all work in a compressed air environment follows the work plan and adheres to the SAFE work procedures.
