SAFE Tips for proper knife use
Every year, many Manitobans suffer injuries from cutting tools like knives and box cutters. And some of these injuries are so severe they result in an amputation of a finger or thumb.
These injuries are preventable.
When working with sharp objects this summer, remember these tips – especially if you’re a new or young worker
- Curl your fingers and cut away from your body when trimming or deboning.
- Use a cutting board or flat surface.
- Store knives securely in proper racks.
- Use the right knife for the job and make sure it’s sharp.
- Hold the knife with your stronger hand.
- Do not drop knives into a dishwasher.
- Keep knives out of the sink.
As always, remember your basic rights and responsibilities as a worker for safety and health on the job.
