If the shoe fits ... wear it
According to SAFE statistics, slips and trips – classified
as “falls on the same level” – are among the highest causes of injury in
Manitoba workplaces. In fact, in 2007 nearly 2,000 workers were injured by
slips or trips – and that's a lot of workers.
Despite their high incidence, these injuries are amongst the
most preventable of all workplace injuries. Besides ensuring workplace floors
are clear of spills and other slipping and tripping hazards, workers can help
protect themselves from slips and trips by lacing up a proper pair of shoes.
Shoes such as high heels and smooth-surfaced soles, in
particular, are often the culprits in slips and falls. There are many types of
anti-slip footwear on the market today as alternatives to fashionable yet
faulted footwear.
Most contain some sort of specialized grip on the sole, as
well as wider, liquid-repelling treads that prevent water from staying
underfoot. The heel and toe of anti-slip footwear are also specially designed
to provide better traction at contact.
Every pair is different, though – and most work supply
stores in Manitoba carry many varieties.
Trying on many pairs will help you determine which fit you
best and can best aid in your fight against slips and trips!
It’s one step you can take to help keep yourself SAFE at your
workplace.
