Tips for working with a pneumatic nailer

Working with pneumatic tools, also known as air nailers and staplers, can be dangerous to yourself and those around you.  It is important to know some guidelines about air tools, and how to remain safe when using them to prevent injuries both in the workplace and everyday life.

First and foremost, if you are expected to use pneumatic tools at the workplace, your employer is responsible for ensuring you are trained to operate the tools safely before you begin to work with them.

General safety tips to follow when using air nailing and stapling tools:

  • Only experienced and trained people should operate air nailing and stapling tools
  • Always wear the proper personal protection equipment including: safety eyewear, face shield, and hearing protection
  • Inspect the tool, and it’s safety mechanisms and parts before connecting it to the air supply to ensure they are in proper working condition
  • Check for correct air supply and pressure before connecting a tool
  • Check that the air supply hose is securely and properly connected to the tool
  • Always handle a tool as if it is loaded with nails, staplers, or other fasteners
  • Make sure the tools have a work-contacting element
  • This part limits the contact area to one that is as small as practical
  • Disconnect the tool from the air supply when it is not in use, being cleaned, or under repair.
  • Use only nails, staples, and other fasteners that the manufacturer recommends, and follow all manufacturer’s guidelines for pressures
  • Only allow trained individuals to carry out tool maintenance
  • Never point the tool toward  yourself or anyone else, regardless of whether it is loaded or not
  • Only pull the trigger when the nose piece of the tool is on the work surface
  • Don’t overreach
  • Always keep proper footing and balance when using air tools

Keep these tips in mind whenever you are using air nailers or staplers.  These simple rules will help prevent injuries, and keep you and those around you safe from avoidable incidents involving air tools.
